Dr. Jim C. Hsu is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon and Associate Professor of Clinical Orthopaedics at Yale University's School of Medicine within the Department of Orthopædics & Rehabilitation. Specializing in sports medicine, he focuses on arthroscopic and minimally-invasive surgery of the shoulder, knee, elbow, and other areas, with particular expertise in developing innovative surgical techniques that minimize patient recovery time and pain.
Dr. Hsu received his Doctor of Medicine degree with Distinction in Research from the University of Rochester School of Medicine (1999) after completing undergraduate studies in Violin Performance at Indiana University School of Music. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at Washington University in St. Louis (2004) followed by an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine fellowship at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, where he served as a fellow physician for the Los Angeles Lakers, Dodgers, and Angels, and worked directly with Dr. Frank Jobe, pioneer of the Tommy John procedure.
His research focuses on developing and refining new surgical techniques for minimal invasiveness, with particular interest in distal biceps tendon repair, PCL tear repair, endoscopic proximal hamstring tendon repair, arthroscopic cartilage and meniscus repair, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, and all-arthroscopic ACL reconstruction versus ligament-preserving ACL repair. Dr. Hsu collaborates with leading industry experts in orthopaedic technology to advance surgical treatment possibilities.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on innovative knotless and minimally invasive techniques across multiple orthopedic specialties, with particular emphasis on tendon and ligament repair methods that preserve bone structure while improving fixation strength and patient outcomes. His work bridges biomechanics, tissue healing biology, and implant design to develop more effective surgical approaches.
