Jim Bell is a Regents Professor at Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration, an Adjunct Professor at Cornell University, and a Distinguished Visiting Scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He specializes in planetary geology, geochemistry, and mineralogy using data from spacecraft missions and telescopes. Bell has been deeply involved in NASA missions like Mars rovers Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, and Perseverance, leading camera systems such as the Pancam and Mastcam-Z. He has authored/co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed papers and numerous books, including Postcards from Mars and The Interstellar Age. He is a past President of The Planetary Society and has received the 2011 Carl Sagan Medal for public communication in planetary sciences.

His research group explores Martian geology, lunar mineralogy, and planetary processes.
