James F. Bell is a Regents Professor at Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration and an Adjunct Professor at Cornell University's Department of Astronomy. His research focuses on planetary geology, surface composition of celestial bodies, and space mission instrumentation. He leads NASA missions including the Mastcam-Z cameras on the Mars 2020 rover and has authored popular science books about space exploration.
Research interests span Martian surface mineralogy, lunar geology, and spectroscopic analysis of planetary bodies. Dr. Bell investigates weathering processes on Mars and develops spacecraft imaging systems for planetary exploration.
His scientific honors include:
- Carl Sagan Medal for Excellence in Public Communication (2011)
- Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and American Astronomical Society
- 18 NASA Group Achievement Awards for mission contributions
He leads an active research group studying planetary surfaces and advises numerous graduate students in space science and instrumentation development.
