Jillian Schwedler is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Hunter College, CUNY. She specializes in Comparative Politics, Social Movements, Political Geography, and Middle Eastern Politics, with a focus on Political Islam and ethnographic methods. Her research explores topics such as Islamist parties, contentious politics, policing, and urban spaces in the Middle East.
Education:

Research Interests: Schwedler’s work examines the intersection of protest, policing, and political identity in contexts like Jordan and Yemen. She analyzes how Islamist parties adapt to inclusion policies, the spatial dimensions of protest movements, and the role of consumption in urban development. Her ethnographic approach emphasizes fieldwork and qualitative methods.
Publications: Her recent work includes studies on the Arab Uprisings, neoliberal protest dynamics in Jordan, and the policing of dissent. She has authored books on Islamist parties and co-edited volumes on Middle Eastern coercion mechanisms.
