Jill Wigle is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University, with cross-appointments to the Institute of Political Economy (IPE) and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) program. She holds a Ph.D. and MSc in Planning from the University of Toronto. Her research investigates urban precarity, spatial justice, and housing rights, with a geographical focus on Mexico City.
Wigle's research interests include:
- The socio-spatial organization of care in cities
- The social production of housing and the right to the city
- Urban planning, spatial regulation, and power dynamics
- Affordable housing alternatives like community land trusts
Her 15 most recent publications (2008–2025) demonstrate a consistent focus on urban informality, community-led habitat production, and spatial politics in Latin America. Dominant themes include grassroots mobilizations for housing rights, contradictions in urban conservation policies, and feminist interventions in marginalized neighborhoods.
Wigle actively advises graduate students and teaches courses including Community-engaged Research (GEOG/ENST 4450) and Approaches to Geographic Inquiry (GEOG 5000).
