Jill S. Schneiderman is a Professor of Earth Science at Vassar College, where she has been since 1994. She holds degrees from Yale (S.B., 1981) and Harvard (M.A. 1985, PhD 1987). Her research spans geological fieldwork across diverse locations, including studies on sediment provenance, microplastics in Cape Cod dunes, and feminist critiques of the Anthropocene concept. She has pioneered interdisciplinary courses linking earth science with environmental justice, supported by a 1997 National Science Foundation grant. As a Congressional Science Fellow, she advised the U.S. Senate on science policy. Her Fulbright fellowship (2003) in Trinidad explored women and water resources. Schneiderman has authored/co-edited major works like Liberation Science and contributes to science and spirituality discourse. She also explores geologic time through contemplative practices.
Her research interests blend empirical geological studies with critical social science, emphasizing equity in environmental decision-making. Major themes include microplastic pollution dynamics, gendered dimensions of environmental crises, and rethinking geology’s historical narratives. Her work bridges natural science, humanities, and activism.
