Dr. Jill Dosso (she/her) serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology within the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia. Her academic journey includes an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship at UBC and BC Children's Hospital (2024), a PhD in Neuroscience from UBC (2020), an MA in Psychological Science from Toronto Metropolitan University (2013), and a BSc in Biology from the University of Lethbridge (2011).
Dr. Dosso's educational background forms a strong foundation for her interdisciplinary research that bridges neuroscience, psychology, and technology. Her work focuses on human-technology interactions, particularly examining how people perceive emerging smart and social technologies like social robots and health wearables. She employs a patient-oriented research approach, prioritizing collaboration with persons who have lived experience of conditions being studied, including children with anxiety and older adults experiencing dementia.
Analysis of Dr. Dosso's publication record reveals a clear trajectory in human-technology interaction research with growing emphasis on vulnerable populations. Her recent work (2023-2024) focuses on social robotics applications for pediatric anxiety and dementia care, while earlier publications examine fundamental cognitive processes like attention and visual perception. This evolution demonstrates her commitment to applying basic cognitive neuroscience principles to address real-world challenges in healthcare technology.
- Pat Atherton Emerging Scholars Award for Patient Oriented Research (2022)
- Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award, University of British Columbia (2020)
- Canadian Neuroscience Advocacy & Outreach Award – Neurohistory project team member (2018)
Dr. Dosso teaches courses on biological and cognitive aspects of psychology, including PSYC 101 (Introduction to Biological and Cognitive Psychology) for which she is scheduled to teach sections in both Winter 2024 and Summer 2025 terms. While she is not available to supervise graduate students according to her profile, she maintains active research collaborations through her work with the Neuroscience, Engagement, and Smart Tech Lab (NEST lab) at UBC and BC Children's Hospital. Her research is supported through her affiliations with the Women's Health Research Institute at BC Women's Hospital, Neuroethics Canada, and AGE-WELL NCE.
Dr. Dosso's research program operates at the intersection of cognitive neuroscience and human-centered technology design, with particular emphasis on creating ethical, effective technologies for vulnerable populations through meaningful community engagement.
