Jill Baumgartner is a Full Professor and William Dawson Scholar at McGill University, holding appointments in both the Department of Equity, Ethics and Policy and the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Occupational Health within the School of Population and Global Health. She serves as Director of the McGill Centre for Climate Change and Health and is an Associate Member of the Beiler School of Environment.
Dr. Baumgartner holds a joint Ph.D. in Population Health Sciences and Environment & Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Masters in Population and International Health from Harvard University. Prior to her current position, she was a Global Renewable Energy Leadership Fellow at the Institute on the Environment (University of Minnesota) from 2011-2013 and a visiting researcher at Tsinghua University in 2012.
Dr. Baumgartner's research focuses on environmental pollutants and their impact on human health within the context of urbanization and development. Her work spans three primary areas: evaluating health benefits of energy and environmental interventions in developing countries; investigating impacts of air pollution composition and sources on health; and understanding chronic disease impacts of environmental exposures over the life course. Her interdisciplinary approach combines environmental science, epidemiology, and policy analysis to address global environmental health challenges.
Analysis of Dr. Baumgartner's recent publications reveals a strong focus on the intersection of climate change, air pollution, and health impacts, particularly in developing country contexts. Her work frequently employs geospatial analysis, remote sensing, and deep learning techniques to characterize urban environments and assess exposure risks. A consistent theme across her research is the evaluation of interventions to reduce household air pollution and their health implications, with significant work conducted in China, Ghana, and other developing regions.

Dr. Baumgartner leads research projects that involve interdisciplinary collaborations to address critical questions in environmental health, including the impacts of improved energy policies on health and climate, climate change effects on child health and wellbeing, and how environmental pollutant exposures influence disease development. Her work often involves measurement of pollution concentrations and exposures to provide unique datasets addressing grand challenges in global environmental health.
