Jiehong Guo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geospatial Engineering at Michigan Technological University. Prior to her current role, she served as a Senior Researcher at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Indiana University Bloomington. Her research bridges environmental science and toxicology, focusing on identifying DNA damage biomarkers caused by carcinogens and developing analytical methods to monitor persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic (PBT) pollutants in environmental samples.
- Education: PhD in Public Health from the University of Illinois at Chicago; MS in Environmental Engineering from Beijing Technology and Business University; BS in Bioengineering from Chang'an University.
Dr. Guo employs advanced mass spectrometric techniques to quantify DNA lesions such as apurinic/apyrimidinic sites in oral cells exposed to tobacco products. Concurrently, she investigates the fate and transport of PBT chemicals, including halogenated flame retardants and chlorinated paraffins, across aquatic and atmospheric systems. Her work spans environmental monitoring, pollutant degradation studies, and health risk assessments.
Her recent publications highlight trends in pesticide analysis, deep-sea chlorinated paraffin detection, and DNA damage biomarker quantification. She has secured NIH funding (R03 CA-259652) to explore tobacco-induced DNA damage mechanisms. Dr. Guo’s research contributes to cancer prevention strategies and environmental contaminant management.
