Jianzhong He

Professor Jianzhong He is a faculty member at the National University of Singapore in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She earned her Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology (2003), M.S. from Tsinghua University (1998), and B.S. from Harbin Institute of Technology (1995). Before joining NUS as an assistant professor in 2005, she was a postdoctoral researcher at University of California, Berkeley (2003–2005), and now serves as Director of the Centre for Environment Resilience (CER).

Research Interests:

• Bioremediation of flame retardants (PBDEs, PCBs) and microplastics
• Conversion of biomass to biofuels and biochemicals
• Anammox processes for energy-neutral wastewater treatment
• Environmental microbiology and genomics
• Microbial degradation of hazardous compounds

• IChemE Biotechnology Award (2019, 2017)
• Hyflux-SNIC Environmental Chemistry Award (2011)
• World Economic Forum's Ten Inspiring Women in Science and Technology (2016)

Teaching Areas: Resource management, biotechnology for hazardous substance management, and advanced environmental microbiology.

Professional Activities: Associate Editor of Frontiers in Microbiology, editorial board member of multiple journals, and leadership roles in IChemE Water Singapore and ISME.
