Jianhui Liu is a Senior Researcher at the Yunnan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, specializing in archaeological excavation and research of ancient humans and Paleolithic sites. His work spans multiple high-profile excavations in Yunnan Province, including the Yuanmou Xiaohe ancient ape fossil site and the Gantangqing Paleolithic site.
Research interests include prehistoric technology, paleoenvironment reconstruction, and the study of early human subsistence strategies. His recent research on 300,000-year-old wooden tools at Gantangqing has revealed sophisticated woodworking capabilities in tropical/subtropical ecosystems.
Key findings demonstrate that these tools were used for harvesting plant resources like tubers and aquatic plants, contrasting with hunting-focused survival strategies in colder regions. The tools were dated using infrared stimulated luminescence and contextualized within a rich ecosystem containing rhinoceros fossils, diving ducks, and subtropical flora.
Grants and Collaborations include funding from the National Cultural Heritage Administration (China), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Australian Research Council (ARC), and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Collaborative efforts involved researchers from University of Wollongong and University of Sheffield.
