Jian Qing SHI is a Professor in the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics at the University of Newcastle, UK. His research focuses on functional data analysis, biostatistics, and applications in healthcare, including movement data analysis for neurological diseases like stroke, dementia, and Parkinson’s. He develops statistical methods for handling incomplete data and model uncertainty, as well as covariance structural analysis in latent variable models.
- Education: Ph.D. in Statistics (not explicitly stated, inferred from title).
Current research projects include handling missing data in causal inference (MRC-funded, £270k) and automated assessment of upper limb function post-stroke. He leads the ASP research group (2010–2014) and serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series C (2010–2013). He has supervised multiple Ph.D. students and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects involving healthcare and remote sensing.
Developed R packages GPFDA and flars for functional data analysis. Active in grants totaling over £2.5M, including a Wellcome Trust Health Innovation Challenge Fund (2012–2014).
Administrative roles include International Officer and Assistant Director for the Cloud Computing for Big Data CDT (2014–2017).
