معرفی
Jian Liu is a John & Deborah McNeill, Jr. Distinguished Professor in the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focuses on glycobiology, particularly heparan sulfate and heparin biosynthesis, and innovative therapies for cardiovascular diseases. He holds multiple NIH grants and collaborates with institutions globally. Dr. Liu’s team includes postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and pharmacy trainees.
Education: PhD in Medicinal Chemistry (University of Iowa, 1993), postdoctoral training at MIT under Prof. Robert Rosenberg. His work bridges biochemistry, molecular biology, and pharmacology to address critical gaps in drug development and regenerative medicine.
Research Interests:
- Biosynthesis of sulfated polysaccharides (heparan sulfate/heparin)
- Enzymatic synthesis of heparin for anticoagulant therapies
- Structure-function relationships of glycosaminoglycans
- Cardiac reprogramming and regenerative approaches
Grants: Principal Investigator on NIH grants totaling over $2.5M, including studies on heparan sulfate structure-virulence interactions and non-animal heparin synthesis. Collaborative roles on projects totaling $1.2M (e.g., co-PI on NSF and NIGMS grants).
Labs/Teams: Leads a multidisciplinary team with expertise in chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology. Key projects include developing enzyme-based heparin synthesis and exploring cardiac cell reprogramming for heart repair.
