Ji Hyun Ko is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba, and holds a Canada Research Chair in Neuroimaging and Neuromodulation. He is cross-appointed to the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering at the Price Faculty of Engineering. His research focuses on developing imaging-based biomarkers for neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, PTSD, epilepsy, and healthy aging. Key areas include brain imaging (MRI/PET) and non-invasive brain stimulation (tDCS/HD-tDCS), with an emphasis on clinical translation of therapies like dual-task walking training and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Dr. Ko earned his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Hanyang University and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from McGill University. His postdoctoral training included functional brain imaging at the University of Toronto (with Dr. Antonio Strafella) and multivariate analysis at New York’s Feinstein Institute (with Dr. David Eidelberg). He leads the Neuroscience Research Program at the Kleysen Institute for Advanced Medicine, accepting Master’s and PhD students for studies in neuroimaging and neuromodulation.
His scientific awards include the CBC Manitoba Future 40 Finalist (2017), Terry G. Falconer Memorial Award (2017), and EJN Best Publication (2009). His lab’s work spans biomarker development, neurostimulation therapies, and interdisciplinary approaches to precision medicine, aiming to bridge laboratory research with clinical practice (“bench to bedside”).
