Jethro Herberg

Professor Jethro Herberg is a Clinical Professor in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London, affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine. He holds honorary consultant positions at St Mary’s Hospital and Royal Brompton Hospital within the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. His research focuses on biomarkers for febrile illnesses, including genetic predisposition and diagnostic transcriptomics. Key affiliations include the Centre for Paediatrics and Child Health, Immuno-Pathology Network, and the Section of Paediatric Infectious Disease.

Education: BA Biochemistry (Oxford University), PhD in Human Immunogenetics (Imperial Cancer Research Fund), and medical training at UCL. He joined Imperial College in 2008 as a clinician-scientist.

Research interests include host transcriptome responses to infections, Kawasaki disease mechanisms, and rapid diagnostic technologies. He leads the DIAMONDS EU Horizon project, developing a 40-host transcript diagnostic test for febrile illnesses, and collaborates on lab-on-chip and lateral flow technologies for biomarker detection. His team received the 2019 Imperial College President’s Award for Outstanding Research Team.

Key awards include the President’s Medal (2019) and leadership roles in initiatives like the KD-CAAP study on Kawasaki disease treatment efficacy and the INGENIOS project on genetic predisposition to severe infections.

Professional activities include roles on the RCPCH Genomics Working Group, ESPID Research Committee, and grant panels for the Rosetrees Trust. He co-leads the paediatric infectious disease module in Imperial’s Applied Paediatrics MSc program.
