Jesús Covarrubias is a Senior Lecturer in Chicana & Chicano Studies at San José State University and a tenured Professor of Ethnic Studies at San Jose City College. He holds an MA from Stanford University and completed doctoral coursework in Education at UC Santa Cruz.
His research examines Mexican American student experiences, educational pathways, and cultural expressions through music. Covarrubias has conducted ethnographic studies on community college transfer challenges and student support networks. He maintains active research interests in border theory, critical race theory, and educational stratification.
As a musician, Covarrubias has released albums with bands including Los Niteliters and served as musical director for theater productions. His academic work connects cultural expression with educational equity issues facing Mexican American communities.
