Jessica Retis is a Professor and Director of the School of Journalism at the University of Arizona, where she also leads the Bilingual Journalism M.A. program. With a career spanning three decades across Peru, Mexico, Spain, and the U.S., she bridges academic scholarship and professional journalism. Her academic credentials include a Major in Communications (University of Lima), an M.A. in Latin American Studies (National Autonomous University of Mexico), and a Ph.D. in Contemporary Latin America (Complutense University of Madrid).
Her research explores the intersection of media, migration, and cultural identity through an interdisciplinary lens. Key areas include:
- International Migration & Diasporas: Examining how transnational communities use media to navigate identity and belonging.
- Ethnic Media & Bilingual Journalism: Analyzing Latinx media production in the U.S., Europe, and Asia as tools for cultural preservation.
- Media Representation: Critiquing discourses of race, class, and coloniality in news narratives about marginalized groups.
