Jessica K Altman, MD, serves as Professor of Medicine in the Hematology and Oncology division at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, based at the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center with clinical affiliation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Her expertise centers on hematologic malignancies, particularly acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), where she leads national research initiatives and clinical trials.
Her educational foundation includes an MD from the University of Pittsburgh (2001), residency at University of Chicago Hospitals (2004), and fellowship at Northwestern University's McGaw Medical Center (2007), followed by board certification in Hematology. Current research explores biomarker-driven therapies, treatment resistance mechanisms, and reducing early mortality through community-academic partnerships in leukemia care.
Analysis of her 2025 publications reveals critical trends: investigation of novel targets like scavenger receptors for inducing cancer cell death, genetic profiling of NF1-mutated myeloid neoplasms, and system-level interventions to improve clinical trial access. These works collectively advance precision medicine approaches in AML management through translational science and healthcare delivery innovations.
Her distinguished recognition includes:
- Nora Cooney Marra Compassionate Care Award (2024)
- Excellence in Teaching Award from Northwestern (2022)
- NCCN AML Panel Vice Chair appointment (2021)
- NCI Leukemia Steering Committee Co-chair role (2020)
- myeloMATCH Tier 4 Working Group leadership (2025)
Dr. Altman directs multiple NIH-funded clinical trials including the myeloMATCH Master Screening Protocol and phase II studies of venetoclax/gilteritinib combinations for FLT3-mutated AML. Her industry collaborations span 15+ pharmaceutical entities for drug development consulting, while maintaining active roles in the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology since 2005.
As a core member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (NUCATS), she co-chairs the NCI Leukemia Steering Committee and 'Great Debates in Hematologic Malignancies' conference, driving national standards for leukemia treatment and fostering academic-community oncology networks to accelerate therapeutic advances.
