Jessica D'eon is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Toronto, based at the Lash Miller Chemical Laboratories. She serves as the Undergraduate Associate Director and received the 2020 Faculty of Arts & Science Outstanding Teaching Award for her contributions to education.
Her research centers on Environmental Chemistry, specifically investigating the fate of fluorinated organics in environmental and biological systems, and xenobiotic chemicals. She pioneers Chemical Education through authentic project-based learning, integrating real-world environmental analyses into curricula. Key initiatives include:
- Undergraduate research on fluorinated compounds and environmental contamination
- Capstone course (CHM 410-1410) featuring air/dust analysis and long-term river monitoring
- First-year laboratory curriculum redesign to incorporate climate science and green chemistry principles
Her pedagogical innovations emphasize student roles as scientific consultants, connecting theory to practical environmental challenges like air quality assessment and contaminated site remediation.
Awards & Recognition:
- 2020 Faculty of Arts & Science Outstanding Teaching Award
She leads laboratory-based research teams in the CHM 410-1410 course, where student groups conduct projects ranging from pharmaceutical analysis in waterways to emissions monitoring, fostering hands-on environmental investigation skills.
