Jessica Barlow is a Professor of Sustainability and Executive Director of the Center for Regional Sustainability at San Diego State University (SDSU). Her work bridges linguistics and sustainability, focusing on sustainable cities through community engagement. She founded and directs the Sage Project, applying the EPIC Model to foster partnerships between universities and communities in Southern California-Baja California.
Barlow holds a PhD in Linguistics from Indiana University (1997). Her research spans child language acquisition, bilingual phonology, speech disorders, and sustainable urban development. She has secured funding from NIH, NSF, EPA, and local organizations. Her dual expertise combines linguistic analysis of speech sound disorders with community-driven sustainability initiatives.
Key research areas include: phonological intervention for bilingual children, telepractice methodologies, and sustainable urban partnerships. Her Sage Project emphasizes cross-sector collaboration for environmental and social equity in urban planning.
Barlow’s work integrates empirical linguistic research with practical sustainability frameworks, addressing both individual-level speech disorders and large-scale community development goals. She has published extensively on phonological complexity, bilingual acquisition patterns, and community-based educational models.
