Dr. Jesse Gardiner is a Lecturer in Russian and Researcher at the University of St Andrews' Department of Russian, part of the School of Modern Languages. He joined the university in 2017 after teaching at Oxford, Durham, and Exeter. He holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham (2014).
His research focuses on 20th-century Russian theatre, exploring intersections between performance studies, cultural history, and critical theory. Key areas include Soviet theatre during the Thaw period, Brecht’s reception in Russia, and post-war dramatic theory. His 2022 monograph Soviet Theatre during the Thaw examines avant-garde revival's role in reshaping Soviet cultural discourse.
Teaching includes Russian literature/culture modules (19th–21st centuries), language courses, and postgraduate components. He leads a student theatre group staging plays like Squaring the Circle and Three Sisters, promoting participation across skill levels. Professional roles include co-coordinating BASEES conference streams and Higher Education Academy fellowship.
Recent publications span book chapters on Oleg Efremov, reviews of Soviet theatre studies, and analysis of post-war dramatic theory. He actively supervises PhD students in Russian theatre topics.
