Lt Col Jesse Foster, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Applied Physics and Deputy Department Head at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). He holds a PhD in Applied Physics from AFIT (2023), an MS in Nuclear Engineering from AFIT (2011), and a BS in Nuclear Engineering from Purdue University (2005). His research focuses on pulsed power systems, plasma physics, radiation effects on electronics, and nuclear weapon effects, with collaborations at institutions like the Air Force Research Laboratory, Naval Research Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratory. He actively advises graduate students and teaches physics and nuclear engineering courses.
Dr. Foster’s research interests include ion beam dynamics, diode physics, and computational modeling of plasma behavior. His work bridges theoretical simulations with experimental validation, aiming to enhance pulsed power applications and mitigate radiation impacts on electronic systems. Recent studies emphasize optimizing pinched-beam diodes and understanding radiation-induced material degradation in advanced semiconductors.
He has received notable awards, including the 2023 MOAA Outstanding Military Professor Award and multiple military service medals. His contributions extend to peer review for Physics of Plasmas and IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science. Beyond academia, he has served in leadership roles across 19 years in the Air Force, including postings with the F-22 program office and the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center.
