Jess Vanecek is a Research Assistant Professor at Tulane University, working on the Yamuna River Project. A designer, researcher, and educator, her work explores the spatial impacts of anthropogenic practices on natural environments, particularly riverine and coastal regions affected by infrastructure and climate change. She teaches architecture studios and seminars, with prior roles at the University of Virginia School of Architecture and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.

Research Interests:
Jess investigates how anthropogenic practices alter natural environments through infrastructural and regulatory interventions. Her work focuses on riverine and coastal territories, using speculative design methods to visualize intersections of climate, policy, and community. She emphasizes adaptive strategies for climate change challenges and ecological revitalization, particularly in urban contexts like the Yamuna River in New Delhi.
Publications:
She co-authored *Way Beyond Bigness: The Need for a Watershed Architecture* (2023), analyzing the Mekong, Mississippi, and Rhine river basins.
Scientific Awards:
Jess was an inaugural Virginia Architecture Fellow and contributed to multiple award-winning competitions across architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design.
Teaching and Practice:
With extensive experience in both academia and practice, Jess blends design research into studio teaching and has worked on interdisciplinary projects involving architecture, urban design, and environmental policy.
