Jess Haskins is an Adjunct Professor of game design at the NYU Game Center within New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She also operates The Game Editors, a boutique studio specializing in editorial services, narrative consulting, and voiceover production for games and interactive media.
Her educational background includes an MFA in Design & Technology from Parsons School of Design and a BA in French from Bard College. With a foundation in languages and literature, she has been editing since 2006 and freelancing since 2016, bringing over 15 years of professional experience to her work.
Haskins specializes in narrative design, worldbuilding, and interactive storytelling, with particular expertise in adventure games. Her professional philosophy centers on 'worldbuilding with intention, forging inclusive communities, and advancing interactive storytelling.' She maintains strong ethical boundaries in her work, notably refusing projects involving 'gen AI, crypto, gambling, or dark patterns.'
Her creative output shows a consistent focus on narrative-rich adventure games, with recurring themes of mystery solving, atmospheric worldbuilding, and character-driven storytelling. Her work often blends historical or alternative historical settings with engaging puzzle mechanics and strong narrative integration.
As a community organizer, Haskins served as chair of the IGDA NYC chapter from 2015-2020 and remains actively involved in the New York game development community. She hosts the long-running NYC Indie Games Social, now in its second decade, and serves on the Joint Council of ACT-UAW Local 7902, the union representing NYU adjunct faculty.
She is a dedicated advocate for ethical game development practices, diversity and representation in games, and the rights of academic workers. Her community work focuses on building sustainable connections within the indie game development scene and supporting emerging developers through networking opportunities and resource sharing.
