Jes Lynning Harfeld is an Associate Professor at the Department of Culture and Learning within the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Aalborg University. He specializes in sociocultural aspects of sustainability and green transitions, with affiliations to AAU Arctic and Green Societies. His research focuses on environmental and animal philosophy, ethics of human-non-human interactions, and philosophy of healthcare/medicine, including topics like animal welfare, diagnostics, and human enhancement technologies.
Harfeld’s teaching responsibilities include courses on academic philosophy, ethics, environmental philosophy, and sustainability. He coordinates the praxis semester and master thesis phase for students, advising numerous master theses annually. He is also a member of the Faculty’s Academic Council.
His research interests span ethical issues in animal husbandry, rewilding, hunting, and biomedical ethics. He has contributed to defining positive animal welfare metrics and exploring philosophical frameworks like Murdoch and Deleuze. His work intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to Philosophy, Biomedicine, and Public Health.
Harfield has been recognized with multiple teaching awards, including Årets underviser at Aalborg University (2021–2023). He actively engages in interdisciplinary projects such as MAMBO (biodiversity monitoring) and LIFT (positive farm animal welfare). His media contributions include the podcast series Den Digitale Agora, discussing AI, education, and digital pedagogy.
His academic network includes collaborations on topics like generative AI in learning, ethical dilemmas in hunting, and the digital agora’s role in education. He also participates in public debates on animal welfare, ethics of whaling, and sustainability policies.
