Jerry Thompson serves as Regents and Piper Professor of History at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, recognized as a highly decorated scholar with national honors for both research and teaching excellence.
His academic foundation includes a BA in history from Western New Mexico University, an MA from the University of New Mexico, and a doctorate from Carnegie Mellon University, forming the bedrock of his expertise in Southwestern U.S. history.
Thompson's research centers on Texas history, the American Civil War, Borderlands dynamics, and biographical narratives, with particular emphasis on cultural identity along the U.S.-Mexico frontier. His acclaimed works like Cortina: Defending the Mexican Name in Texas and Tejano Tiger examine power structures and resistance in border regions through meticulous archival reconstruction and narrative-driven analysis.
