Jerry Miller is a Distinguished Professor holding the Blanton J. Whitmire Professorship in Environmental Science at Western Carolina University. With 25+ years in geomorphology and environmental geology, his research develops watershed management tools and analyzes contaminant transport.
Research examines heavy metal fate in river systems, restoration ecology, and anthropogenic impacts on fluvial processes. Funded projects exceed $3.5M, supporting fieldwork in sediment dynamics, plastic pollution, and forensic environmental analysis.
Publications include Contaminated Rivers: A Geomorphological-Geochemical Approach and 65+ peer-reviewed articles. Recent work quantifies macroplastic pollution in headwaters (2024) and analyzes COVID-19 impacts on transplant outcomes (2023).
Teaching covers geomorphology, hydrology, and sediment quality, training students in environmental assessment techniques. Professional affiliations include Geological Society of America and American Geophysical Union.
