Prof. Jerry Bernholc is the Drexel Professor in the Department of Physics at NC State University, part of the College of Sciences. He leads the Center for High Performance Simulation (ChiPS), established in 2004. His research focuses on theoretical condensed matter physics, nanoscale science, and high-performance computing. Bernholc holds a PhD from Lund University, Sweden, and has held roles at IBM Research and Exxon Research before joining NC State in 1986.
His expertise spans semiconductor defects, fullerenes, nanotubes, and advanced computational methods for electronic structure calculations. Current research emphasizes nanomaterials, molecular electronics, energy storage, and scalable parallel computing algorithms. Over 250 peer-reviewed publications and 220 invited talks highlight his contributions, with work featured in Science, Physics Today, and others.
Prof. Bernholc’s articles since 2023 reflect a focus on ferroelectric polymers, nanocomposites, and high-temperature materials, showcasing advancements in dielectric properties, electrothermal actuation, and computational modeling. His work bridges computational physics with practical applications in energy and nanotechnology.
As a Visiting Distinguished Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratories since 2002, he collaborates on large-scale simulation projects. His leadership in ChiPS drives interdisciplinary research in high-performance computing and materials innovation.
