معرفی
Jerome Sgard is a Professor at Sciences Po specializing in law and political economy, with research centered on market construction and regulation through micro-founded institutional analysis. His work emphasizes sovereign debt crises, international commercial arbitration, and global economic governance, drawing on historical and legal perspectives. Affiliated with the Centre d'Etudes et de Recherches Internationales (CERI), he bridges economics, law, and history in both research and teaching.
Holding a Doctorate (habilitated) in Economics from the Universities of Grenoble and Paris 10 Nanterre, Sgard previously served as Associate Professor at Paris Dauphine University (1999-2011) and researcher at CEPII. His educational background informs his interdisciplinary methodology combining archival research, interviews with key historical figures, and economic analysis.
Sgard's research explores how legal procedures and actors like judges, arbitrators, and international organizations shape market秩序. His seminal 2023 book The Debt Crisis of the 1980s, Law and Political Economy examines the 1980s debt crisis through IMF archives and interviews with central figures including Volcker and de Larosière. Current projects investigate historical market governance models like the London Corn Market and central bank liquidity swaps, revealing persistent themes of institutional co-evolution during financial crises.
His publication trends demonstrate consistent focus on the interplay between legal frameworks and market behavior across centuries, from 18th-century French mercantilism to modern sovereign debt disputes. Articles span economic history, law, and international relations, characterized by deep archival work and attention to procedural rules in transnational contexts.
At Sciences Po, Sgard teaches Introduction to Global Economic History and Law, Markets and Politics at the undergraduate College level, and Growth and Reform in Emerging Economies and Global Economic Governance at PSIA. As a CERI permanent researcher, he contributes to interdisciplinary studies of international political economy, with ongoing work on arbitration history and global financial architecture evolution.
