Professor Jerome Gauntlett is the Chair in Theoretical Physics at Imperial College London's Department of Physics, part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. His research focuses on string theory, quantum field theory, and black holes, with applications to gravitational waves and condensed matter physics. He has held academic positions at institutions including Queen Mary University of London and the Perimeter Institute.
Education: BSc (1986) University of Western Australia, PhD (1991) University of Cambridge. Career highlights include postdoctoral roles at the University of Chicago and Caltech, followed by professorships at Queen Mary (1996–2003) and Imperial College (2003–present).
Research interests span quantum gravity, black hole thermodynamics, and geometrical structures in string theory. He contributed to the movie The Theory of Everything and has an Erdos-Bacon number of six. Notable talks include discussions on black holes and fundamental physics at the Royal Institution.
Editor for the Journal of High Energy Physics and organizer of the 2024 conference celebrating his 60th birthday, Branes, Black Holes, and Geometry. Media engagements include BBC interviews and appearances in documentaries like Windrider with Nicole Kidman.
