Jeremy Varon is a Professor of History at The New School for Social Research and Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. His work focuses on post-1945 US history, the global 1960s, Holocaust studies, and political violence. He earned his PhD in History from Cornell University under Dominick LaCapra. Varon's research combines critical theory with oral history methodologies, having conducted nearly 100 interviews. His major works include Bringing the War Home (2004) on radical movements and The New Life (2014) on Holocaust survivors' academic journeys.
Education: PhD (1998), MA (1995) from Cornell; BA (1989) from Brown University.
Research explores intersections between trauma, radicalism, and state power. Current projects include a study of post-9/11 anti-war movements and co-editing The Sixties journal. His activism spans decades, including leadership in Witness Against Torture opposing Guantanamo detention.
Teaching focuses on historical methods, social movements, and global 1960s studies. Public engagement includes essays in Public Seminar and Los Angeles Review of Books, analyzing topics from Mad Men to contemporary resistance tactics.
