Jeremy Tatar is an Assistant Professor of Music at Carleton College since 2024. He holds a BMus and MMus from the University of Sydney and a PhD in music theory from McGill University, where his dissertation examined meter, phrase, and form in sample-based hip hop.
His research interests span music theory, disability studies, Polish modernism, and the work of composer Morton Feldman. His scholarship interrogates intersections between bodily experience, cultural narratives, and musical forms, particularly in hip-hop contexts.
Recent publications include analyses of hip-hop sampling practices in Zeitschrift der Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie (2025), disability representation in Ye’s ‘Through the Wire’ (2023), and a critical review of rhythmic frameworks in rap music (2022). These works reflect his engagement with disability aesthetics, sample-based composition, and racialized musical embodiment.
At Carleton, Tatar teaches courses like Disability in Popular Music, Musicianship I/II, and Seminar in Music Analysis. Personal interests include cycling, running, baking, techno music, and indoor gardening.
