Jeremy Sugarman is the Harvey M. Meyerhoff Professor of Bioethics and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, and holds concurrent professorships in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health. He serves as Deputy Director for Medicine at the Berman Institute and chairs the Institutional Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee at Johns Hopkins University.
He earned a B.S. from Duke University, M.D. from Duke University School of Medicine, M.P.H. from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and M.A. in Applied Ethics from Georgetown University.
His research focuses on bioethics in areas such as informed consent, stem cell-derived embryo models, HIV prevention/cure trials, and global health ethics. He has authored over 400 publications and edited four books on bioethics methodologies and research oversight.
Recent work addresses ethical challenges in decentralized clinical trials, pragmatic trial design, and the use of race in medical testing. He consults with federal commissions and international bodies on bioethics policy, including roles with the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues and the Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission.
His grants include leadership in NIH’s Health Care System Research Collaboratory and PCORnet’s Ethics and Regulatory Task Force, addressing ethical issues in large-scale health systems research.
