Jeremy Phillip Brown is an Assistant Professor of Theology and Jewish Studies at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on medieval Judaism, particularly Iberian Kabbalah, Jewish-Christian polemic, and the dissemination of Kabbalistic ideas in Latin America. He holds a PhD from New York University and has held positions at McGill University and the University of San Francisco.
Education: PhD and MPhil from New York University (Hebrew and Judaic Studies), BA from Reed College (Religion).
Research interests include the Zohar, penitential discourses of Kabbalah, and the intersection of Franciscan and Jewish mysticism. His publications analyze Kabbalistic gender theories, ritual efficacy, and medieval interreligious dynamics.
Recent articles explore topics like women’s ritual efficacy in Kabbalah, messianism in Catalan texts, and Franciscan-Jewish parallels in divine economy.
He has co-edited Accounting for the Commandments in Medieval Judaism and contributed to volumes on Kabbalah’s global influences. His work bridges medieval Jewish thought with modern ideological debates around mysticism and nationalism.
