Dr. Jeremy Luban is a distinguished Professor and the David J. Freelander Memorial Professor in AIDS Research at UMass Chan Medical School. He maintains multiple appointments across the T.H. Chan School of Medicine in the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biotechnology, Program in Molecular Medicine, and RNA Therapeutics Institute, as well as in the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences across several programs.
Dr. Luban received his BA in Biology from State University of New York at Purchase and his MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. His educational background laid the foundation for his career as a physician-scientist focused on viral pathogenesis.
As a physician-scientist, Dr. Luban's research program centers on the intricate interactions between human cells and deadly pathogens, with particular emphasis on HIV-1, Ebola virus, and SARS-CoV-2. His laboratory employs cutting-edge virological, immunological, and molecular techniques to unravel the mechanisms by which these viruses evade host defenses and establish infection. His work has significant implications for developing novel antiviral strategies and understanding fundamental aspects of host-pathogen interactions.
Analysis of Dr. Luban's recent publications reveals a continued focus on viral pathogenesis with expanding interests in computational biology approaches to understand viral evolution. His work spans structural virology, host restriction factors, retroviral integration mechanisms, and innate immune sensing of viral pathogens. Notably, his research bridges basic science discoveries with potential therapeutic applications.
Dr. Luban has received numerous scientific honors including:
- David J. Freelander Memorial Professor in AIDS Research
- Election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation
- Election to the Association of American Physicians
- Election to the American Academy of Microbiology
- NIH Merit Award
- NIH Avant Garde Award
With a research program continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for over 30 years, Dr. Luban has established himself as a leader in the field of viral pathogenesis. He has served on editorial boards of four major virology journals and contributed to numerous grant review committees and scientific advisory boards for the NIH, American Cancer Society, and American Foundation for AIDS Research. Dr. Luban has been a dedicated mentor, serving as primary advisor for 90 PhD students, postdocs, and undergraduate researchers, fostering the next generation of scientists in virology and immunology.
Dr. Luban directs the Luban Lab, which focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of viral pathogenesis, with particular emphasis on host-virus interactions. His laboratory is affiliated with the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and contributes to the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness, where he oversees a program focused on SARS-CoV-2 research. The lab maintains active collaborations across multiple institutions, facilitating translational research from basic discoveries to potential therapeutic applications.
