Jeremy Goldbogen is an Associate Professor of Oceans at Stanford University, with a courtesy appointment in Biology. He is based at the Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford's marine research facility. His research focuses on the biomechanics, ecology, and conservation of large marine vertebrates, particularly baleen whales. Goldbogen holds a BSc in Zoology from the University of Texas at Austin (2002), an MSc in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2005), and a PhD in Zoology from the University of British Columbia (2010).
His work integrates field observations, biologging technology, and computational modeling to study how whales forage, migrate, and interact with their environment. Key research themes include the energetics of feeding behaviors, impacts of human activities (e.g., plastic pollution, shipping), and the role of whales in marine ecosystems. Goldbogen has pioneered studies on lunge-feeding kinematics, whale-borne sensor systems, and the biogeochemical roles of cetaceans.
Goldbogen’s lab collaborates with marine policy initiatives to address conservation challenges, particularly around mitigating human-wildlife conflicts and protecting critical habitats. His interdisciplinary approach bridges marine biology, physics, and engineering to advance understanding of Earth’s largest animals.
