Eric Ezell serves as Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of the South (Sewanee), concurrently holding leadership roles as Science Director of Canadian non-profit BC Whales and research partner with the Foundation for Marine Ecology & Telemetry Research. His work bridges academic research with community-based conservation initiatives in critical marine habitats.
His educational background includes:
- B.A. from Sewanee: The University of the South
- Ph.D. from Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Dr. Ezell's research centers on marine predator ecology and conservation challenges, with four interconnected pillars:
- Foraging strategies of large marine predators in temperate fjord systems
- Real-time monitoring tools for whale/seabird population management
- Endangered species conservation in developing coastal regions
- Shipping impact mitigation in critical feeding habitats
Student training occurs through two intensive summer programs: Sewanee's Island Ecology field school on St. Catherine's Island and BC Whales' remote research station in northern British Columbia. On campus, he teaches Biology, Environmental Studies, and Environmental Science courses while collaborating with Sustain Sewanee and Sewanee Greenhouse on campus sustainability initiatives. His research infrastructure leverages BC Whales' land-based monitoring network and whale telemetry data partnerships.
