Dr. Jeremy Ferrell is an Associate Professor at the Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment, Appalachian State University. He specializes in renewable energy systems, controlled environment agriculture, and bioenergy technologies, with a focus on industrial ecology and appropriate technology applications in low-income regions.
- Ph.D., Energy & Environmental Systems, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (2014)
- M.A., Appropriate Technology, Appalachian State University (2005)
- B.S., Natural Resources, North Carolina State University (1999)
His research spans greenhouse design, bioenergy from organic waste, and sustainable technology transfer, particularly in developing countries. Recent projects explore biochar applications, waste-to-energy systems, and microclimate control in agriculture. His publications emphasize integrating renewable energy with agricultural practices and closing production loops through bioenergy.
Dr. Ferrell mentors students through theses on topics like biochar particle size effects on microbial activity, vermicomposting bin viability, and bioenergy systems. He leads USDA-funded initiatives on sustainable farm technologies and serves as Assistant Department Chair.
