Dr. Jeremy De Valck is a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Business and Law, CQUniversity Australia, with affiliations to the Coastal Marine Ecosystems Research Centre (CMERC) and the Centre for Regional Economies and Supply Chains (CRESC). He holds a PhD in Environmental Economics from KU Leuven and advanced degrees in Natural Resource Management and Bioscience Engineering from Cranfield University and ULiège. His research focuses on environmental valuation techniques, particularly non-market evaluation of ecosystem services, cultural service quantification, and spatial discounting effects. Since 2016, he has contributed to over $2.4M in projects assessing socio-cultural and environmental impacts in the Great Barrier Reef region.

Research Interests: Jeremy’s work bridges environmental economics and GIS, emphasizing valuation frameworks for ecosystem services, recreational use analysis, and biodiversity protection. He has pioneered methodologies using choice experiments and spatial discounting to assess substitutability of nature areas. Recent projects include mud crab indicator systems for marine health monitoring and valuation of New Zealand’s native forests.
Grants & Projects: He leads CRESC’s Rural and Regional Economies theme, coordinating $2.4M+ projects on Great Barrier Reef Basin economics. Notable outputs include the 2024 Gladstone Harbour Report Card indicators and frameworks for coastal ecosystem accounting.
