Jeremiah Osborne-Gowey

Jeremiah Osborne-Gowey is a Research Associate Instructor at the Environmental Studies department within the Institute of Behavioral Science at the University of Colorado. As an interdisciplinary environmental and social scientist, he works at the nexus of science, policy and natural resource management with particular reference to human and environmental system adaptation to stressors.

Dr. Osborne-Gowey applies mixed methods to explore complex interactions between humans and the natural world drawing from natural resource management, conservation, sociology, communication, economics and public policy. His research focuses on Coupled Natural-Human Systems (CNH), Complex Social-Environmental Systems (SES), Resilience and Adaptation to Environmental Stress and Hazards, Human Decision-Making, Environmental Behavior, Human Health and Well-being, Migration, and Rural and Agricultural Livelihoods. His current work spans the United States, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, examining how social and environmental stressors shape livelihoods, decision-making and adaptation to water scarcity and changing environmental conditions in rural agricultural communities and wildfire-affected areas.

His publication record reveals a strong emphasis on climate change media coverage analysis, with numerous papers examining newspaper coverage trends from 2004 through 2025 across global and regional contexts. He also has significant research on social capital, migration, and agricultural practices in South Asia, as well as work on transformative learning networks and science communication methodologies.

Prior to his academic career, Dr. Osborne-Gowey accumulated over 15 years of practical experience as an aquatic/landscape ecologist working with Federal and State agencies, universities, and private and non-profit consulting firms throughout the Western United States. This field experience informs his interdisciplinary approach to environmental and social systems research.
