Jeremiah Edward Hurley is Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Professor in the Department of Economics at McMaster University. He is also affiliated with the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis and the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact. His research spans health economics, policy analysis, and experimental methods with a focus on healthcare financing, equity, and system design.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts from John Carroll University, and both Master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His research explores:
- Physician behavior and financial incentives in healthcare
- Public-private roles in health financing
- Equity in health systems
- Experimental economics applied to health policy
- Normative frameworks for resource allocation
Recent publications (2018-2025) emphasize health inequalities, economic evaluations of mental health interventions, aging studies, and policy critiques. Methodologically, they combine econometric analysis, longitudinal surveys, and behavioral experiments to address systemic challenges in healthcare.
As a consultant, he advises regional, provincial, national, and international agencies on health economics. He authored the Canadian health economics textbook Health Economics and leads interdisciplinary collaborations through McMaster's research centers.
