Dr. Jerald Radich, MD, is a Professor in the Translational Science and Therapeutics Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and a Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He holds the Kurt Enslein Endowed Chair at Fred Hutch and is a Member of the Immunotherapy Integrated Research Center (IIRC). As a medical oncologist specializing in molecular genetics of leukemia, Dr. Radich directs the Molecular Oncology Lab, which provides high-quality molecular testing for clinical cancer researchers worldwide. His work has significantly advanced the detection and treatment of chronic and acute myeloid leukemias.
Dr. Radich's educational journey includes a BA in Biology with Honors from UC San Diego (1976), an MA and MS in Epidemiology from Harvard University (1979), and an MD from UC Davis (1983). He completed his Internal Medicine training at University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals, including internship (1984), residency (1986), and Chief Medical Resident (1987), followed by a Medical Oncology fellowship at UW and Fred Hutch (1990).
His research focuses on the molecular underpinnings of therapy response, resistance, and relapse in hematological malignancies. Dr. Radich pioneered the use of BCR-ABL monitoring to detect minimal residual disease in CML, which became the standard for predicting relapse and guiding treatment. His laboratory employs cutting-edge techniques such as single-cell gene expression analysis and microfluidic platforms to study clonal evolution and identify genetic variants that influence treatment outcomes. Current projects include investigating 'outlier responses' in leukemia, deciphering clonal evolution in CML and AML, and developing affordable molecular diagnostics for global use in partnership with The Max Foundation and iCMLf.
Dr. Radich has been recognized with the Kurt Enslein Endowed Chair at Fred Hutch, an honor reflecting his significant contributions to leukemia research and global health.
As the director of the Molecular Oncology Lab, Dr. Radich oversees a certified diagnostics facility that performs rapid genetic tests for leukemia patients enrolled in clinical trials. He serves as Principal Investigator for Protocol 1690, a national study examining genetic markers for relapse in leukemia, and has collaborated with industry to develop automated diagnostic assays. His work has established the International Scale for BCR-ABL testing and accelerated clinical trials by enabling early assessment of treatment efficacy.
