Jeppe Bach Nikolajsen

Jeppe Bach Nikolajsen is a Professor of Systematic Theology and Missiology at MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society. His research focuses on post-Christendom ecclesiology, Lutheran ethics, liturgical theology, and the intersection of church and state in pluralistic societies. He has held leadership roles including Director of the Egede Institute, Chief Editor of the Norwegian Journal of Missiology, and membership in the executive committee of Resonans (a Nordic theology-philosophy-politics network). Nikolajsen earned his PhD from MF in 2010 and holds a Master's from Aarhus University (2007).

His work critiques traditional church governance models and advocates for missional ecclesiology, emphasizing liturgy's formative role and scripture-based communal identity. Key themes include adapting Lutheran theology to contemporary pluralism, rethinking church-state relations, and exploring ethical frameworks rooted in denominational traditions. Recent publications address legal-theological critiques of Denmark's folk church governance and reforming Lutheran political theology.

Nikolajsen has authored over 90 publications including monographs like The Distinctive Identity of the Church (2015) and edited volumes on missional theology. His peer-reviewed work appears in International Journal of Public Theology, European Journal of Theology, and Missiology - An International Review. He serves on editorial boards for major theology journals and advises Denmark's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on religious freedom initiatives.
