With extensive leadership experience, he previously served as Dean of Research at the Faculty of Medicine (2019-2022) and has been instrumental in establishing the Centre for Pandemics and One-Health Research.
Berg holds a cand. med. (1995) and dr. med. (2004) from the University of Oslo and is a specialist in medical biochemistry. His academic career includes multiple leadership roles:
- Professor of Medicine (Clinical Biochemistry) at UiO since October 2007
- Senior consultant (20%) at the Department of Medical Biochemistry, Oslo University Hospital
- Head of Research at SUSTAINIT, UiO (March 2024-May 2025)
- Acting Head of Center for Pandemics and One-Health Research (January 2023-February 2024)
- Head of Education in Clinical Biochemistry (October 2016-December 2018)
- Head of Department of Medical Biochemistry (October 2015-January 2019)
Berg's research focuses on biochemical and hormonal changes in endocrine diseases, particularly pituitary tumors and diabetes, as well as One-Health and sustainable solutions for health and life sciences. His work bridges clinical practice with molecular and biochemical investigations to understand disease mechanisms and improve diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on endocrine disorders, particularly pituitary tumors and diabetes. The research spans from basic molecular mechanisms to clinical applications, with a growing emphasis on population health and multi-ethnic studies. His work often involves interdisciplinary collaboration across medicine, biochemistry, and public health.
Berg holds several important positions in national and international organizations:
- Board member of Inven2 (2025-)
- Board member of Norway Health Tech (2025-)
- Member of The Directorate of Health's National Council for Diabetes

- Managing editor of Scandinavian Journal of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation (since 2010)
Throughout his career, Berg has demonstrated leadership in research administration and has been involved in numerous collaborative projects between the University of Oslo and university hospitals. His work has contributed significantly to understanding biomarkers in endocrine diseases and developing sustainable health solutions through the One-Health approach.
Berg is actively involved in several research groups including the Biochemical Endocrinology and Metabolism group and The Blood Cell Research Group at the University of Oslo.
