Prof. Jens Gebauer is a Professor at the Faculty of Life Sciences, Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences, specializing in horticulture and biodiversity conservation. His research focuses on agroforestry systems, climate impacts on tree species, and sustainable agricultural practices in Africa and Central Asia. He leads projects on baobab (Adansonia digitata L.) domestication, non-timber forest product utilization, and genetic diversity conservation. Key areas include ecological adaptation of multipurpose trees, community-based resource management, and bridging traditional knowledge with modern agricultural techniques.
Research interests span plant propagation (seed scarification, provenance studies), agroecological zoning, and socio-economic determinants of homegarden systems. His work integrates field monitoring, species distribution modeling, and interdisciplinary collaborations. Recent projects include the SUFACHAIN initiative for sustainable agroforestry value chains and assessments of baobab populations in Sudan, Kenya, and Malawi.
Publications highlight contributions to understanding baobab morphology, genetic diversity of Afzelia africana, and climate change impacts on crop viability in arid regions. He emphasizes practical applications through manuals for baobab cultivation and field guides for homegarden crops.
