Professor Jens Gattermann is a faculty member at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg (THA) in the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering. He serves as Vice Dean of Architecture and Civil Engineering and is a Member of the Faculty Council for Architecture and Civil Engineering.
Professor Gattermann was appointed to THA in spring 2013. His academic journey began with civil engineering studies from 1990 to 1995 at RWTH Aachen University and Imperial College London, where he earned his diploma. He continued at Aachen as an assistant and later as a senior engineer/lecturer at the Institute for Foundation Engineering, Soil Mechanics, and Rock Mechanics, where he completed his doctorate on sealing structures made of highly compacted bentonite in rock salt repositories.
His research interests focus on geotechnical engineering, with special emphasis on:
- Soil mechanics
- Foundation engineering
- Rock mechanics
- Tunnel construction
- Special foundation engineering
Before joining academia full-time, Professor Gattermann gained valuable industry experience working as a construction manager and authorized signatory in an engineering firm, where he was involved in planning, tendering, and construction management of numerous buildings and major projects.
At THA, Professor Gattermann teaches in the Bachelor's programs in Civil Engineering, the Master's program in General Civil Engineering with a focus on Foundation Engineering and Infrastructure, and the Master's program in Project Management.
