Jens Förstner is a Full Professor (W3) for Theoretical Electrical Engineering at Paderborn University since 2013. He currently serves as Director of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (since October 2023) and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. His roles include coordinating the MSc Optoelectronics & Photonics program and leading the Institute for Photonic Quantum Systems (PhoQS).
Education & Career:
- PhD in Physics (2004), Technical University Berlin
- Postdoctoral research at TU Berlin, University of Arizona (Tucson), and Technical University Berlin
- Head of DFG Emmy Noether junior research group on Computational Nanophotonics (2007–2013)
Research Focus: His work spans theoretical and computational nanophotonics, quantum optics, plasmonics, and integrated photonics. Key projects include the Transregional Collaborative Research Centre 142 (photonic quantum systems) and PhoQC (photonic quantum computing). He explores topics like optical antennas, nonlinear optics, and quantum communication infrastructure.
Teaching: Offers courses on electromagnetic field simulation, quantum systems, and scientific computing. Current courses include Fields & Waves and Electromagnetic Waves and Waveguides.
