Jens Bartelson is a Professor at the Department of Political Science, Lund University. He holds a PhD from the University of Stockholm (1993). His research focuses on international relations, the history of international thought, and political theory. He has authored influential works like Becoming International (2023), War in International Thought (2017), and A Genealogy of Sovereignty (1995). His recent publications address themes such as empire critique, sovereignty, and Renaissance foundations of modern international thought.
Education: PhD in Political Science, University of Stockholm (1993).
Research Interests: International relations theory, history of political concepts (sovereignty, recognition), global governance, and the intersection of political philosophy with historical analysis. His work often bridges intellectual history and contemporary debates in international politics.
Grants & Projects: Lead PI for the STANCE project (2015–2020), exploring state-making and global order. Currently supervises doctoral students on topics like democratic defense and political community. His recent grants include research on de-centering state-making and global political theory.
Advising: Supervised PhD students including Paul Nitzschner (Defending Democratic Defense), Simon Viksand (A World of Persons), and David Gustafsson (The Present People).
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with interdisciplinary groups at Lund University on projects like STANCE and Democracy Beyond the Nation State.
