Dr. Jenny Paterson is an Assistant Professor in Psychology at Northumbria University. She holds a BSc in Psychology from Berry College (summa cum laude), MA in Social Psychology from University of Hawaii at Mānoa, and PhD from University of Leeds. Her research applies intergroup contact theory and social identity frameworks to:
- Prejudice towards romantic relationships (interracial, interreligious)
- Community-level impacts of hate crimes
- Conspiracy beliefs and non-normative behaviors
- Emerging work on prejudice against single people (singlism)
Her publications demonstrate how hate crimes affect entire communities and how high-profile interracial relationships influence social attitudes. Recent articles explore conspiracy theories' role in political action and impacts on targeted groups.
Dr. Paterson's policy-impactful research informed the UK's Community Impact Statements for hate crimes and contributed to parliamentary reviews. She collaborates with criminal justice agencies, police services, and NGOs including the Crown Prosecution Service and Stonewall.
