Jenny Gunton is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney and Chair of Medicine at Westmead Hospital. She leads the Centre for Diabetes, Obesity and Endocrinology Research (CDOER) and the Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR), focusing on diabetes, obesity, bone health, and micronutrient regulation of transcription factors.
- PhD (University of Sydney, 2003)
- Postdoctoral fellowship at Joslin Diabetes Center/Harvard Medical School (2005)
- Established Diabetes & Transcription Factors lab at Garvan Institute (2005-2014)
Her research explores vitamin D and iron in diseases like diabetes, obesity, liver disorders, and muscle weakness, using adeno-associated vectors (AAV) for gene therapy. Current projects include human islet transplantation, HIF-1alpha in aging, and genetic therapies for brittle bone disease.
Recent work highlights checkpoint inhibitor-induced autoimmune diabetes, vitamin D-muscle interactions, and micronutrient supplementation in diabetic complications. Her lab investigates beige/brown fat activation and beta-cell nutrient sensing.
Scientific awards include the ADS Wikramanayake Prize for mid-career diabetes research. She supervises PhD students and has mentored 12 PhD completions, including award-winning honours students.
Key collaborations exist with the Joslin Diabetes Center (Boston) and Salk Institute (San Diego), focusing on diabetes biology and vitamin D-liver disease interactions. Grants include NHMRC Program Grants and Diabetes Australia Research Grants.
